The Floriography Collection

Moorcroft work with Douglas Macmillan Hospice to celebrate their staff, the charity and art as a medium for all that is worthy of praise

Floriography is the term used to represent the language of flowers. It was coined during the Victorian era (1837-1901) to define the symbolic meanings attributed to various flowers. Moorcroft designer, Emma Bossons FRSA, has created an outstanding collection inspired by the language of flowers to support Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

Symbol of Adoration                                                                                                          (pictured above)  steps forward as one of the most uplifting designs in the floriography Collection and possibly, in Moorcroft's illustrious history.  the sunflower, not only the charity’s trademark flower, but also symbolising adoration. Anyone who has ever experienced the Macmillan staff at first hand will know how the cheerful sunflower, like someone’s face, can have a positive imprint on the soul of another.

‘Dougie Mac’, as it is known locally, has been providing hospice services, free of charge to local communities across North Staffordshire and adjoining villages since 1973. The hospice prides itself on delivering excellent palliative end of life care to local children, young adults and adults; offering holistic supportive care to their families and carers too. In truth, words such as kindness, compassion and dignity sprang forth when the charity asked their staff, volunteers and supporters what key words were most apt to describe the care Dougie Mac is known for. This gave Emma the idea of creating a collection inspired by the meaning of flowers, to encapsulate some of the attributes given to the charity in floral design. The Floriography Collection contains 3 limited and one numbered edition piece for added collectability.

In the Symbol of Adoration design, floral tributes rises up from the base of the vase in an extravaganza of blues and greens, full of movement and intrigue. Leaves and stems entwine majestically and honeysuckle, in coral to deep red hues, draw your eye upwards. In the language of flowers, honeysuckle represents devoted affection – an affection that will not leave you when you need it most.

If that was not enough, sunflowers burst into bloom under the rim of the vase with their bright cheery faces – just like Dougie Mac people themselves. This vase is part of the Floriography Collection which was created specifically to mark Dougie Mac’s 50th Birthday. When you acquire Symbol of Adoration, 15% from your purchase will go to Dougie Mac, once VAT has been deducted.

Dougie Mac’s Head of Fundraising, Donna Adams, states:

“We were delighted when Moorcroft said that they were going to produce the Floriography Collection to mark Dougie Mac’s 50 years of care. All the pieces have such poignancy and are truly stunning! The collection is a fitting tribute to the care and support Dougie Mac has offered to local communities across North Staffordshire for 50 years – thank you to Moorcroft for all their support.
